Matthew: Chapter 1

  1. The record of the lineage of Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ), son of David, son of Avraham (Abraham).
  2. Avraham (Abraham) begat Yitzchak (Isaac), Yitzchak then begat Yaʿaqov (Jacob), Yaʿaqov then begat Yehudah (Judah) and his brothers,
  3. Yehudah (Judah) then begat Peretz and Zerach (whose mother was) Tamar, Peretz then begat Hetzrom, Hetzrom then begat Aram,
  4. Then Aram begat Amminadav, then Amminadav begat Naason, then Naason begat Salmon,
  5. Salmon then begat Bo’az (whose mother was) Rachav, Bo’az then begat Oved (whose mother was) Rut, Oved then begat Yishai,
  6. Yishai then begat David the King. David then begat Shlomo (Solomon) by the wife of Uriyah,
  7. Shlomo (Solomon) then begat Rechav’am, Rechav’am then begat Aviyyah, Aviyyah then begat Asaph,
  8. Asaph then begat Yehoshafat, Yehoshafat then begat Yoram, Yoram then begat Uzziah,
  9. Uzziah then begat Yotam, Yotam then begat Achaz, Achaz then begat Chizqiyahu (Hezekiah).
  10. Chizqiyahu (Hezekiah) then begat Menasheh, Menasheh then begat Amos, Amos then begat Yoshiyahu,
  11. Yoshiayahu then begat Yekonyah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.
  12. After the Babylonian exile Yekonyah then begat She’altiel, She’altiel then begat Zerubbavel,

  16. Ya’aqov then begat Yosef (Joseph) the husband of Miryam (Mary) from whom was born Yeshua (Jesus) called the Messiah.
  17. Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the Babylonian exile are fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian exile to Christ are fourteen generations.
  18. This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came to be. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together in marriage, she was found to be bearing a child through the Holy Spirit.
  19. But Joseph her husband, a righteous man, and not desiring to make a spectacle of her, intended to secretly divorce her.
  20. As he dwelt on this, behold! The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
  21. She will bear a son, and you will call him by the name of Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
  22. Now all of this came to be, in order to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:
  23. “Behold! A virgin will be with child, and will bear a son, and they shall call him by the name of Emmanuel,” which means ‘God is with us.’
  24. Then Joseph awoke from sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord enjoined him and took to himself his wife.
  25. And he did not know her before she had borne a son, and he called him by the name of Jesus.
