Matthew: Chapter 1, Verse 3

✍️ Greek Text (Base)

Ἰούδας δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Φάρες καὶ τὸν Ζάρα ἐκ τῆς Θαμάρ, Φάρες δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἑσρώμ, Ἑσρὼμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀράμ,

🧾 Vocabulary & Parsing Notes

  • Naming conventions are the operative issue here. I have the choice to use the Hebrew form, the Greek form, the Latin form, the scholarly pattern, or modern Hebrew form.

  • My first inclination was to maintain the Greek form, but I see now that this can obfuscate the Old Testament connection. The names we’ve inherited in modern English are a bit of a mish-mash of all of these options. I’m going to lean to the Hebrew for historical pre-NT figures.

  • ἐκ τῆς Θαμάρ – literally “of/from Tamar” but seems to indicate the matrilineal descent. The purely genitive construction might lead one to think this was a place and not a person.

📜 Translation Draft

  1. Yehudah (Judah) then begat Peretz and Zerach (whose mother was) Tamar, Peretz then begat Hetzrom, Hetzrom then begat Aram,

📚 Comparison Notes

  • NABRE: Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,
  • NJB: Judah fathered Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram,
  • KJV: And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
