Matthew: Chapter 1, Verse 11
✍️ Greek Text (Base)
Ἰωσίας δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰεχονίαν καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς μετοικεσίας Βαβυλῶνος.
🧾 Vocabulary & Parsing Notes
- μετοικεσίας – gen. sing. fem. “Change of abode, migration.” Exile, deportation, expatriation.
📜 Translation Draft
- Yoshiayahu then begat Yekonyah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.
📚 Comparison Notes
- NABRE: Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.
- NJB: and Josiah fathered Jechoniah and his brothers. Then the deportation to Babylon took place.
- KJV: And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
- Differences worth noting: There’s some interesting punctuation mark choices in the previous translations. I think expatriation really gets the point across here, but I can’t find a not-awkward way to phrase is that’s faithful to the text. I may be trying to shoehorn it in when “exile” or “deportation” works just fine.
