Matthew: Chapter 2

  1. Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold! wise men from the east appeared in Jerusalem,
  2. saying, “Where has been born the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east, and have come to do him reverence.”
  3. But when King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
  4. And having gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he enquired of them where the Messiah is being born.
  5. Then they said to him, “In Bethlehem in Judea; for in this way it has been written by the prophet:
  6. [block quote] ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the governors of Judah; for from you shall come a leader, who is to shepherd my people Israel. ’”
  7. Then Herod secretly called the wise men and scrutinized them as to the exact time of the star’s appearance.
  8. And having sent them to Bethlehem he said “Then depart! Carefully search out the child; after you find him report to me, so I may do him reverence, too.”
  9. Having listened to the king, they set out, and lo! the star which they had seen rising in the east went before them until it came and set itself above the child.
  10. Then having seen the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
  11. And having entered the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and fell down in reverence to him. Then opening their precious treasures, they offered him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh.
  12. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, by another way they withdrew to their own country.
